Sole trader vs limited company builder — does it change your claim in Flintshire County Council?
The short answer: yes, materially. A limited company caps what you can recover at the company's assets; a sole trader is personally liable for everything they own. The check takes two minutes on Companies House and should change how you structure payments.

How to tell, and why it matters
- Companies House record exists → limited company: your judgment is against the company. A shell with no assets wins you paper (the company check).
- No company record, trades under their own name → sole trader/partnership: personal liability — a judgment reaches their house, car, savings.
- "Trading as" a name without incorporation → check whether the name is registered anyway; it often is.
Practical consequences in Flintshire County Council
- Sole trader + big job → insist on insurance certificates (the questions) and stage payments.
- Limited company + big job → the card route matters more, and so does the director-history check.
- Either way: letter before action → Claims up to £10,000: small claims track.
