Check a gas engineer before you pay
The short answer: the official registers are free and take minutes: Gas Safe Register. Gas work by an unregistered engineer is illegal — check the person's licence, not the firm. Membership is a vetting signal, not insurance — the written contract protects you more than any logo.

The pre-hire screen
1. Registers: Gas Safe Register. 2. Companies House — company age, directors, prior dissolved firms (the full check). 3. Fixed quote against a written scope, staged payments, retention. 4. Ask what certification the work produces — and check it afterwards.
If it goes wrong: the gas engineers dispute guide and the money-back route map.
