Driveway & landscaping disputes — the resin-and-sub-base scam belt
The short answer: driveways attract the worst doorstep scams in home improvement: cash-only crews, "leftover tarmac" pitches, and work that looks perfect for a fortnight then sinks. The failures are underground (sub-base, drainage, membranes) — which means your evidence must go underground too: opening-up, independent inspection, and the dig-test.

The five classic failure points
1. Inadequate sub-base — the #1 driveway failure: depth/compaction far below the standard needed for vehicles. Symptoms: sinking, rutting, cracking within weeks-months. Proving it means opening up a section (a dig-test) — an independent contractor can excavate a test pit, photograph the layers, and quote reinstatement. 2. No drainage planning — new driveways over 5m² towards the road need drainage consideration (runoff rules); water pooling against the house or flooding the pavement is evidence of design failure. 3. Resin failures — resin-bound laid on wet days, over damp bases, or too thin: bubbling, delamination, staining. The install date vs weather records can prove the wet-day install. 4. Block paving — no sharp sand/compaction, edge restraints missing (blocks creep), jointing compound skimmed. 5. The leftover-tarmac scam — "we had materials left from a job up the road, cash today only". This is the classic rogue-trader pitch; anything they lay over your existing failed surface is worthless. Report via Citizens Advice → Trading Standards — doorstep crews work whole streets and patterns matter.
Evidence that wins a driveway dispute
- The quote — and the absence of written scope is itself part of the scam; reconstruct what was promised in a dated memo now.
- Photo timeline — day of completion (looks great), 1 month, 3 months, after frost. Frost-lifting and sinkage develop seasonally; dated photos tell the story.
- The dig-test/opening-up report with layer photos and depths measured against the industry-expected construction.
- Independent reinstatement quotes — full dig-out and rebuild per square metre, for the schedule of loss.
- Payment trail — cash scams live on untraceable payment; if you paid by bank/card, the trail helps; if cash, your dated notes and any receipts still matter.
The doorstep crew survival rules
- No decision on the doorstep, ever — a legitimate contractor quotes in writing.
- No cash to cold callers; no "today only" pricing.
- If they've already started "uninvited work" on your drive (damage-then-offer), that's a criminal-pattern complaint: police non-emergency (101) + Trading Standards via Citizens Advice.
Route
Letter before action with the photo timeline → independent dig-test report → small claims (most driveway claims sit comfortably in the limit) — and see the money-back route map for the payment-rail options.
