Builder disappeared in Birmingham City Council? — check the company, then claim

The short answer: a builder who stops answering has usually not escaped — the company record survives. Look the company up on Companies House today: status, directors, prior dissolved companies. Then run the civil route; a missing builder strengthens, not weakens, a claim of breach.

Step 1 — Look the company up (free, official)

Companies House search — enter the exact name from your quote/invoice. You will see: incorporation date, registered office, directors (and their other companies), filing history, and status (active / dissolved / liquidation). Screenshot the record into your evidence file.

Step 2 — What the status means for your claim

  • Active — proceed normally: letter before action to the registered office, then small claims.
  • Dissolved — your claim is not dead: apply to restore the company to the register to pursue it (proportionate for larger losses), or pursue directors personally where they traded fraudulently — take advice on that step.
  • Liquidation — register as a creditor with the liquidator; recoveries are usually poor, which is exactly why the card route matters.

Step 3 — Paid by credit card? Use it

Section 75 makes the card lender jointly liable for breach or misrepresentation — even when the builder has folded. Deposit-on-card covers the contract price in general. Debit cards: chargeback (time-boxed, free to try).

Step 4 — Report the abandonment

Birmingham City Council Trading Standards

Council Trading Standards pages confirm the team enforces consumer protection law in Birmingham. Consumer complaints are triaged nationally via the Citizens Advice consumer service, which passes them to the council. Abandonment patterns matter to enforcers — one report rarely triggers action; many do.
