Poor workmanship: what are my rights in the UK?

Define the defect, not just the disappointment
Describe what was promised, what was delivered and the measurable difference. ‘It looks bad’ becomes stronger when paired with the specification, a photograph, a level or moisture reading, an independent report or a precise safety concern. Avoid destructive testing until the evidence plan is clear.
The usual service remedies
For a service that does not meet the statutory standard, the Consumer Rights Act can provide a right to repeat performance within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience. Where repeat performance is impossible, not completed properly or would cause significant inconvenience, a price reduction may be available. The remedy depends on the contract and facts; a full refund is not automatic.
Send a useful complaint
- Identify the contract, property and work package.
- List each defect with a photograph or document reference.
- State the remedy you want and a reasonable response date.
- Invite an inspection without admitting access to unsafe areas.
- Reserve your position on the cost of remedial work and further loss.
- Keep proof of delivery and every response.
When to obtain an independent report
A report may be proportionate where the defect is technical, the contractor denies causation or remedial cost is disputed. Ask the expert to distinguish workmanship, design, materials, later alterations and ordinary wear. Do not instruct an expert to argue the case; ask for an independent technical opinion.
Questions people ask
Can I get a refund for poor workmanship?
Possibly, but the remedy is fact-specific. The trader may first have a right to repeat the service; a price reduction can apply where repeat performance is impossible or not completed within a reasonable time.
How long is a tradesman liable for work?
The contractual limitation position depends on the work, contract and jurisdiction. In England and Wales a simple contract claim is commonly subject to a six-year limitation period, but a defect may be discovered later and special rules can apply. Get advice before relying on a date.
What should I do if a tradesman has done a bad job?
Stop avoidable damage, photograph the work, notify the trader in writing, obtain a proportionate assessment and give a reasonable chance to inspect or remedy. Do not let an urgent safety risk wait for an argument about procedure.

Before escalating: preserve the contract, photographs, payment record and independent assessment. A structured evidence bundle is often more useful than a longer email.
